Although still commonly known to many as a fuse box, the modern consumer unit no longer contains fuses, and is fitted instead with MCB's (Miniature Circuit Breakers.) Working in the same way as a fuse, an MCB prevents short-circuiting and overloading due to surges and excessive currents, but employs a 'trip switch' to cut power. To reconnect, all you need to do is simply flick the switch back to the 'on' position and you're back to normal, with no need to keep spare fuses and torches to hand.

The benefits of a modern consumer unit don't end with convenience. They're also highly effective in preventing electrical fires thanks to the RCD (Residual Current Device) fitted inside. As well as protecting against electrocution, an RCD can detect other faults including partial live earth breakdown, one of the known causes of electrical fires.
